Pettier Onus

HeavyConfetti is the name of a “virtual band,” the sonic muse of Tony Hubert. Mr. Hubert grew up listening to too much jazz and prog rock and hence does far too much “widdling” (as the Brits say) on the guitar in most of his work. He is decidedly influenced by the guitar stylings of Allan Holdsworth, John McLaughlin, and Robert Fripp as well as 20th Century Classical Music.

Mr. Hubert has, since 2001 produced 25 albums. In addition to having a few simmering in the “can,” he is presently working on an album entitled Pettier Onus (for FAWM 2009).

Behind the Band Name

Many years ago some friends and I who were struggling to get a band together did some brainstorming on band names. We came up with dozens, good and bad, and one of the names I came up with was “heavyconfetti.” This name was soundly dismissed! At the time I wasn’t offended or anything because I’d just come up with the name on a lark; it just so happened that the picks I was using (and still use today) were Fender Heavys, confetti colored, hence the band name “heavy confetti,” or “confetti heavy.”

The group had some fun but never really got off the ground. Around 2000 I decided to move from the analog world of recording and mixing and enter completely into the digital realm. For this, I wanted a “muse,” or a vehicle, a “band,” but one where I would play all the parts–bass, drums, keys, guitar, synth, bad vocals. I wanted to create a website and host my work for free. In 2001 I decided on the name “HeavyConfetti.” For me, it had the oxymoronic ring of names like “Jello Biafra,” or “Faith Popcorn.” August, 2001 I finished my first album, Velcromagnon, launched the website and have been noodling around ever since.
